Tititea, 2026
Waterjet-cut stained glass, copper foil, timber frame
110 × 155 cm
Named for Tititea / Mt Aspiring, this stained-glass work builds upon the direct outlook toward Mt Aspiring National Park, reimagining the forms of mountains, waterways, vegetation, and changing light conditions as a network of interwoven shapes.
Developed through a process of drawing and digital design, the composition sits somewhere between landscape, ornament, and abstraction, while entering into dialogue with broader histories of decorative art and architectural design. The work distils elements of the surrounding landscape into a parallel visual language of colour, pattern, and form.
The window is conceived using both waterjet-cut technology and traditional stained-glass techniques, with individually cut pieces of coloured and textured glass assembled through a network of fine lead cames. Variations in texture, translucency, and hue allow light to animate the surface, creating subtle shifts throughout the day as the work responds to the landscape beyond the window.
Unlike conventional stained glass, which often obscures the view beyond, Tititea maintains a direct visual connection to the landscape outside. The forms within the glass echo elements of the surrounding environment, allowing the mountain, weather, and changing light conditions to remain active participants in the work. As conditions shift throughout the day, the relationship between the view and the stained-glass image is constantly renewed.
